声を中心に、音楽・身体・空間を横断する表現を行うアーティスト。クラシック声楽を基盤としながら、作詩作曲作品始め、オペラ、歌曲、現代音楽、即興、バンドなどジャンルを越えて活動している。
京都市立芸術大学音楽学部声楽専攻首席卒業。ロームミュージックファンデーション奨学生としてスイス・チューリッヒ音楽大学(現.チューリッヒ芸術大学）にて研鑽を積む。
コロラトゥーラの透明な高音から、身体性を伴うプリミティブな発声、囁きや即興的な声まで、多様な声の響きを探究。声そのものを楽器、また身体の延長として捉え、音・身体・空間の関係から生まれる表現を模索している。
舞台作品、映画音楽、ダンサーや映像作家とのコラボレーションなど、さまざまな分野でも活動。島根県物部神社での奉納演奏や空間的パフォーマンスなど、場の響きや精神性と結びつく声の在り方にも造詣が深い。
また、作詩作曲による作品制作も行い、2025年にはファーストソロアルバム『花束降るひ』を発表。自然や神話、身体の記憶をモチーフにした詩的な言葉と、多層的な声の表現によって独自の音楽世界を展開している。
現在はソロ活動のほか、多様なアーティストとのセッションや、変拍子バンド「おおくぼけいと建築」のヴォーカルとしても活動。ヴォイスコーチとしては、bunkamuraコクーンアクターズスタジオにて発声講師を務めるなど、ライブパフォーマンスに加え、コーチングなどを通しても、歌・声の可能性を探究している。

Midori Kurata is a soprano singer and voice artist whose work explores expression across music, body, and space through the human voice. Grounded in classical vocal training, she works across genres including her own original works as a poet and composer, opera, art song, contemporary music, improvisation, and band music.
She graduated at the top of her class from the Kyoto City University of Arts and studied at the Zurich University of Music (now Zurich University of the Arts) in Switzerland as a Rohm Music Foundation scholar.
Kurata’s vocal expression ranges from transparent coloratura soprano to primitive, body-based vocalizations, whispers, and improvisational sounds. She approaches the voice as both an instrument and an extension of the body, exploring musical expression that emerges from the relationship between sound, body, and space.
Her work spans stage productions, film music, and collaborations with dancers and visual artists. She has also performed ritual offerings at shrines such as Mononobe Shrine in Shimane, exploring the spiritual and spatial resonance of the human voice.
Kurata also creates original works as a poet and composer. In 2025, she released her first solo album Hanataba Furu Hi, featuring songs written and composed by herself. The album weaves poetic language with layered vocal expression inspired by nature, mythology, and bodily memory.
Alongside her solo activities, she performs with various artists and is the vocalist of the polyrhythmic band “Kei Okubo to Kenchiku.” As a voice coach, she teaches vocal training at the Bunkamura Cocoon Actors Studio in Tokyo, while continuing to explore the possibilities of singing and voice through both performance and teaching.
